Core Facilities

The Westmead Research Hub Core Facilities include Cell Imaging, Electron Microscopy, Flow Cytometry, Genomics and Proteomics. Sydney Cell and Gene Therapy are also located at Westmead and part of the Westmead Research Hub.

There are currently six microscopes available for researchers to be trained on and use.

Transmission electron microscopy provides a very significant increase in resolution over conventional light microscopy, but should be considered a complementary technique to other microscopies.

Cell Sorting is an advanced key technology in Flow Cytometry and a fundamental tool in medical research, which allows rapid analysis and accurate collection of specific cell populations at extremely high speed, high purity and high viability for further research or clinical purposes.

Genomics involves functional and structural characterization of genes (DNA) and their products (RNA) to determine genetic factors that play a role in disease.

Biomedical Proteomics at Children's Medical Research Institute (CMRI) is a collaborative research resource that combines applied proteomics with the development of Mass Spectrometry (MS)-based qualitative and quantitative methods for protein identification and characterisation.

The development of the shared facilities and associated research synergies has led to the establishment of Sydney Cell and Gene Therapy, an entity created to support in-house innovative research and third party research organisations.
