Background
Westmead Research Hub was established in 2001 by four founding partners and has grown to a network of seven organisations supporting more than 1,400 researchers and students.
Rather than a single location, it operates as a connected hub of activity across the campus, bringing people, expertise and infrastructure together. Its work contributes to improved health outcomes through collaborative, translational research.
The Hub is governed by a Council and managed by the Executive Committee, supported by a series of committees made up of partner representatives. These committees guide high-priority activities such as shared core research facilities, joint grant applications, events and major initiatives. Committee members are committed to working collaboratively, positively and constructively for the greater good.

From research discovery to real-world impact
Since the sequence of the full human genome was published in 2001, medical research has accelerated and changed direction in efforts to produce diagnostics, cures and preventions for major human diseases. Coupled with advances in other fields, this has led to rapid changes in survival and quality of life in a number of previously fatal cancers, such as melanoma. New methods of treatments such as gene and cell therapy have also been developed and provide exciting new avenues to treat patients with fatal congenital diseases in children as well as leukaemia and lymphoma in adults.
Over two decades, Hub partner organisations have worked together in areas such as gene and cell therapy, precision medicine, cancer research and infectious diseases, supported by shared infrastructure, expertise and a commitment to improving health outcomes.
Westmead’s connected research and healthcare ecosystem enables discoveries to be translated into patient benefit more efficiently. Continued investment in collaboration, infrastructure and research capability will help maximise this impact for future generations.
Mission statement
Westmead Research Hub undertakes projects that encourage collaboration – in sharing both physical resources and brain power of its members. The goal of the Hub is to grow Westmead as a world-leader in health and medical research by exercising our strength in numbers.
